"That reaction right there is why I didn't mention it, well I did, I think, but ... I don't know, sorry, he's a fucking cop, a homicide detective attached to the Texas Rangers no less." Marcus had just finished hissing back at Raa when his uncle approached the table.
"Let's make this quick. The whole damn restaurant doesn't need to know our business and you two have along drive ahead of you." He looked Raa dead in the eye with a calm blank expression. No malice, but not much else. "And you just chill and listen before you act on that thought, four days ago I felt the same about you." He pulled a pair of keys from his pocket and tossed it to Raa. Looking at both of them He sighed and rubbed at his chin. "You are eighteen, or will be in a few hours. 1:15am hell yeah I remember the day you were born. Anyway. I only ask you both to forgive the way I acted at the house the other day. I went off like an ass based on less than half of all the facts about you two. If you wanna fault me or hold it against me for being overprotective of you Marcus so be it, you can wear the jackass name tag."
"I forgive you Uncle TJ, but I won't apologize for what I said or how I said it." Marcus had never spoken to anyone the way he did that day, nor how he was speaking now. He could accept the apology, but it would take time to completely smooth things out.
"Fair enough...but I'm not just asking you, I'm asking you too Raa. It took a whole lot of talking, and you both know Mack don't talk that much about anything, but he.. has his ways of getting his point across. He told me in no uncertain terms just how highly he thought of you. And that is the only reason... I feel I can trust you." He pointed at Marcus. "I am not his father, but he is as close to a son as I'll ever get. He has been through more hell than any one sixteen seventeen eighteen year old should have to deal with. Hell yeah I'm overprotective, but I'm not an idiot and can admit I made a mistake."
Are we masters of our destiny, or are we simply pawns of fate?
